Quite a few people have asked me about the tools that I use for interviews and photography, so I decided to write a quick blog post to share a little about what I’ve been using for the blog. Similar to my hair routine, I keep things simple with the tools that I use for photography. As a new photographer/blogger, I practice the “if it’s not broke, don’t fix it” approach because it allows me to perfect my methods using existing tools and develop a personal style while continuing to learn/grow.
With that said, here are the tools that I’m currently using:
- Nikon D3100 – I randomly purchased my Nikon in 2011 at a B&H store while visiting NYC. It’s refurbished, so it didn’t cost too much. I’m proud to say that I’ve used my camera more times in 2017 than in 2011 – 2016 combined. It’s never too late too start using your camera and remember that it’s the photographer who captures the vision, not the camera that captures the vision.
- iPhone 6S – I use my iPhone 6S for photography if (for some reason) I don’t have my camera or my camera battery is dead. Quite a few people are solely using their iPhone for photography and this is something that I want to improve in 2018.
- Voice Memo – this is the app that comes with the iPhone 6S. I started using voice memo for interviews thanks to a friend who didn’t want to see me struggle with remember key points from interviews. Said friend will remain unnamed. If someone can provide me with tools for making transcribing interviews easier, I will forever be indebted to you!
- Affinity Photo – I really try to keep the editing to a minimal because I want people to see themselves as they are with little editing. Affinity Photo is super cheap and relatively straight forward to use so I don’t need to worry about making a longer term invest in Adobe Lightroom or Photoshop, at the moment. With that said, I am exploring the use of more filters to make the photos ‘pop’ a bit more in 2018.
Currently, that’s all that I use for the blog. What are your favorite tools to use for photography, blogging or conducting interviews? Sometime during the next couple of weeks I plan on creating a few photography related goals for 2018 which will incorporate the use of more filters, specifically VSCO filters.

Hey there. Thanks for sharing. I too use Nikon, but a 5500. I fell in love with it all over again a couple of years ago when I moved to DC. Have you ever heard of On1 Photo? It’s a great, inexpensive editing app comparable to photoshop and Lightroom. I use it more, actually. I like what you have going on here.
